I Love Hummus
As I sat at my desk eating lunch the other day (yes, yes, I know that it's a bad thing to do - but I'm moving on), I came to the realization that I love hummus. Really. I love hummus so much, that if I had to choose one thing that I would eat for the rest of my life, I actually think I would choose hummus. Isn't that crazy? Hummus would actually beat out cheesecake (that's so NOT me, to NOT choose cheesecake. But, seriously . . . hummus is that good!)
I think the first time I ate hummus was probably 11 years ago. My husband and I lived in a lovely little apartment in LaGrange, Illinois (I LOVE LaGrange. Not as much as I love hummus. But I do love LaGrange.) LaGrange is a darling little suburb of Chicago filled with homes rich in architecture and character. Our apartment was a dream come true (until a few months after moving in, when we were informed the building was sold and the apartments were going condo. That was a sad day in LaGrange!) Anyway, back to the hummus.
There was a charming little Greek restaurant not far from our apartment in LaGrange named Grapevine. PG and I visited Grapevine as often as we could. But not too often, as we were a newly married couple and $ was tight (it still is tight ... but not as tight as back then!) Anyway, back to the hummus.
PG and I would have dinner at Grapevine on those really special occasions (like April 15th of 1999, after mailing our income taxes for the first time as husband and wife). It was at Grapevine when I first tried hummus. I was hooked, immediately. Yes, I love hummus, and LaGrange, Grapevine, and my husband (but not in that order!)
So, as I sat working away (eating my hummus), thoughts of that place in time came to my mind. When our nights were carefree and when we could honestly focus on each other during a dinner conversation. Wow. PG and I are heading to Washington DC next week. He is going for work, and I am going for fun. When his work is done, he will join me in the fun, and I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to this trip. We need it bad. Our days have been hectic and way too crowded lately, and our connection has been majorly interrupted because of it. While we are still speaking the same language, lately we've had some misunderstood moments. That is never a good thing. So, I am really looking forward to our DC trip. Maybe while we are there we will find some hummus. Hmmm ... I love hummus.
What do you love? What takes you away to another place and time? Oooo - and what would YOU choose to eat for the rest of your life, if you could only choose 1 thing? I'd love to know.

Well.. being married to an egyptian - you can imagine - HUMMUS is HUGE in our home - but let me introduce you to something even better - Tahini (pronounced tahina) - yes.. yes.. just alone (mixed properly) trumps hummus. I discovered it in Egypt. Some people put it in hummus, but they eat this along. (Mixed with water, vinegar, cayenne, lemon juice, paprika, salt & pepper) - dip anything in it - AHHHHHHH... delicious! (PS - Good for you too!)
ReplyDeleteYUMM-O Nicole! I actually LOVE Tahini, too!! I must have been (or been married to) in Egyptian in a past life! ;) Phil's uncle makes an awesome Tahini salad dressing, and whenever they come over and ask if they can bring something - I always request it!! ;) Great ... I'm craving it now! Looks like I'll be making a phone call to Uncle Bill this week!
ReplyDeleteI, too, love hummus. Dee-lish stuff, beats out cheese cake for me any day! :-) Cheese is my #1, all time, could eat it for the rest of my life, food. Any cheese, I love it all!
ReplyDeleteI tried the BEST hummus of my life in Chicago!! I wish I could remember the name of it...you would probably know it...I know it was by the lake...hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteAs for what I would eat? I love cheese, too. But I think I would choose Sterzings Potato Chips {can only get those where I grew up in Iowa} and Prairie Farms onion dip {another thing only in the area where I grew up. Delish!!}
Coffee. I'd consider not eating again if it meant I couldn't have my coffee. I just tried hummus for the first time about a month ago- it always sounded gross HA! It was quite tasty! ;)
ReplyDeletehummas is GOOD! If i could eat only one thing...it would have to be sushi! Thats my go to food that I just always love!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know you asked a question I am supposed to answer, but I have to talk about hummus now. I have been sucking down Trader Joe's spicy hummus for years now and just recently I discovered Fresh and Easy's Lemon and Cilantro hummus. YOW! GOOD!
ReplyDeleteOK. I think I am done, but seriously, I think I could talk about it for hours.
Have fun in DC! I LOVE it there & want to go back!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...if I could only eat ONE thing for the rest of ever, it would be my favorite meal from our favorite little local Italian place. Yum-o!
We love hummus too an have it almost daily with blue chips or pita chips. I tried to make my own once. Not so good. So I stick to Trader Joes.
ReplyDeleteI left you something at my blog!!
See Mom Smile sent me over as we are fellow award winners.
ReplyDeleteI am half Jewish and I hate hummus. I'd make such a horrible full Jew.
Wow, I just wrote about food & memories! Strawberries and marinara remind me of childhood. (I don't eat them together.)
ReplyDeleteAs for hummus, I just discovered it a few months ago and LOVE it! Sabre supremely spicy is my fav.
Let's go back to Grapevine with the girls soon! I miss that place...long overdue for a visit.
ReplyDeleteI love hummus AND tahini! There's a little place right here in Old Town called The Happy Pita and they make the best of both. Gosh I like so many different foods. It would have to be a tie between pancakes and sushi. And definitely not at the same time!
